What happened to everyone I ran around with on the playground or the kids I saw in the nurse’s office with scraped up knees and bruised elbows? Throughout our life we cross paths with so many people that play some small part in turning us into who we are today, but what about the people that play a bigger role. Growing up I had many friends or acquaintances, if you will, and now that I look back, I wonder where everyone went. One of my favorite books is The Outsiders and the author, S.E. Hinton, has a quote you may have heard that always stuck with me. She said, "If you have two friends in your lifetime, you're lucky. If you have one good friend, you're more than lucky". As I briefly mentioned, I have had many friends over the years, but only two good/best friends. One of them has been my friend since before I can remember and the other I met in college. I have so many stories and memories with these two guys that it is impossible to recount them all. As time went on, we each had our own adventures and made new friends and memories. Yet, despite everything, we always remained so close. Friendship is something that both parties have to be committed to and make an effort to maintain. Especially, when you are unable to talk or see each other on a regular basis. Take time this week to think about your friends that you have not spoken to in a few days, weeks, months, or even years. Who did you think about? What did you think about? Take a little more time and write them a letter, an email or simply a text message saying hello. Let them know that out of all the people you have met in the world, they popped into your head when the subject of friendship came up. For someone to stick out, they must have played some big role in your life.
